Curriculum Intent
John Hanson Community School Curriculum Intent
We want students to leave John Hanson with the highest possible qualifications, whilst also ensuring that they develop into adults who are assets to society, know right from wrong, are confident and tolerant of all. Within our Inspire, Care, Succeed ethos we want to develop the students’ habits of learning so that they receive an inspirational education leading to them becoming ‘caring learners’ and ‘successful people’.
To do this the overarching aim is to maintain a broad and balanced offer for as long as possible; maintaining music, art and technology through a 3 year KS3, alongside an offer of 3 languages – all delivered by specialists.
Staff have strong subject knowledge and are focused on high quality curriculum planning and content sequencing. This ensures that the students experience a depth of coverage within the curriculum in order to prepare for KS4. Students’ increased maturity and knowledge enables them to make well-reasoned decisions about future studies. At KS4, the curriculum offer caters for all students, as well as ensuring an increasing % take the EBacc. This will lead to the majority of students following a demanding academic curriculum at KS4, with appropriate adaptations made to ensure that all students can succeed. A tailored, rigourous and exceptional PSHE programme, and a developing programme around character and cultural capital, also ensures that all students gain the skills needed to make them good citizens. All of this, alongside a thriving extra-curricular offer, (particularly in Sport and the Arts) leads to students continuing to succeed beyond John Hanson Community School.
Within the taught academic curriculum there is a focus on key knowledge and concepts. A focus on ensuring students can retain, recall and link this knowledge and these concepts will lead to mastery of subject specific content and vocabulary so that they can then apply them as skills.
