Computing

Head of Faculty: tom.featherby@jhanson.hants.sch.uk

Key Stage 3 KS3 students have one hour of Computing each week. Students study a wide range of topics that will help them increase their ICT skills. As a department we feel that it is very important to link ICT with real life scenarios, this allows students to apply the skills they have learnt in school to real life situations outside of school.

Year 7 – During this year students will cover a variety of topics including, Baseline Testing & E-Safety, Small Basic, Computer Systems, Spreadsheets, Algorithms and Microbits.

Year 8 – During this year students will develop their knowledge further and will cover a number of topics including, Advanced Spreadsheets, Beginners Python, HTML programming, Computer Systems & Networking, and Data Representation

Year 9 – During year 9 we deliver topics that directly link to the courses we offer in KS4. Students cover the following: Cyber Security, Business, Advanced Python programming, Advanced Photoshop, Computational Thinking and Flash Animation

Each module of work lasts 6 to 7 weeks and during this time students complete between 2 pieces of home learning, which will be outlined on Show my homework.

GCSE Computer Science

OCR’s GCSE (9–1) in Computer Science will encourage students to:

 • understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of Computer Science, including abstraction, decomposition, logic, algorithms, and data representation

• analyse problems in computational terms through practical experience of solving such problems, including designing, writing and debugging programs
• think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically
• understand the components that make up digital systems, and how they communicate with one another and with other systems
• understand the impacts of digital technology to the individual and to wider society
• apply mathematical skills relevant to Computer Science.

 OCR Creative iMedia

The Cambridge Nationals in Creative iMedia will equip learners with a range of creative media skills and provide opportunities to develop, in context, desirable, transferable skills such as research, planning, and review, working with others and communicating creative concepts effectively. Through the use of these skills, learners will ultimately be creating fit-for-purpose creative media products. The Cambridge Nationals in Creative iMedia will also challenge all learners, including high attaining learners, by introducing them to demanding material and techniques; encouraging independence and creativity and providing tasks that engage with the most taxing aspects of the National Curriculum.

This is a level 2 course, which will take 120 guided learning hours to complete.
There are two mandatory units, Pre-Production Skills and creating digital graphics.
Students will need to complete two additional units which can be chosen from an extensive list such as Storying telling with a comic strip, Website creation, Digital animation, Digital sound, digital video, developing digital games, digital photography etc.

Assessment
 Pre-Production Skills – This unit of work is assessed through a 1 hour 15 minute written exam, which is worth 25% of the overall grade.
 Creating Digital Graphics – Students will complete tasks set by the exam board, which will be internally assessed and externally moderated. This will take students approximately 10 hours and will be worth 25% of the overall grade.
 Optional units – Students will complete two optional units where they will complete tasks set by the exam board, which will be internally assessed and externally moderated. Each of these will take students approximately 10 hours and each will be worth 25% of the overall grade.
