Physical Education

John Hanson’s PE faculty endeavours to encourage and inspire all pupils to develop their full potential through a range of purposeful activities within a challenging environment.
Pupils will be encouraged to develop personal attributes of commitment, fairness and passion and an appreciation of honest competition and good sportsmanship. Pupils will develop an understanding of the benefits of participating in Sport and the impact it could have on their health and well-being.
Pupils by the end of Key Stage 4 our curriculum should ensure pupils
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives.
Key stage 3
Pupils should build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2, become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities. They should understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. They should develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life, and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.
Pupils should be taught to:
- use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis]
- develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports [for example, athletics and gymnastics]
- perform dances using advanced dance techniques within a range of dance styles and forms
- analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
- take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs.
Key stage 4
Pupils should tackle complex and demanding physical activities. They should get involved in a range of activities that develops personal fitness and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle.
Options Pupils can opt for two courses at the end of KS3 in PE. Pupils will be guided to pick the course which best suits them, with one course being assessed through an examination and practical ability (GCSE PE) and the other through coursework and online test. Both courses offer the same amount of practical lessons and both are aimed for students who will share our passion for PE.
Homework
Homework in GCSE PE will be set on a regular basis. Homework for BTEC Sport will mainly be set for the online test unit.
Extra – Curricular
Pupils are given many extra-curricular opportunities to participate in a wide range of sports after school, whether that is in the form of a competitive fixture or a club. The faculty also lead a watersports trip and ski trip to Europe each year, as well as netball and football tours. We also offer the opportunity for students to go and watch national and international events in a number of sports.
